Why do women blog less?

Interesting discussion about diversity in the blogosphere going on at Tony Karrer's blog.

Why do you think that women blog less than men? Do women like the personal nature of conversation? If blogs are similar to diaries why do men blog more than women? Surely the opposite would be case?

Are blogs a way for men to show their knowledge and women aren't interested in 'showing off''? Many theories and opinions out there...

I would love to hear from women!

I'd dispute that women blog less. Many blogs I read are by women, some are very widely read bloggers, and many of them post once a day. Have you heard of the BlogHer conference and website (www.blogher.org)? It's full of women, and there were 800 or so at the conference this weekend.

I didn't read all of the comments at the blog you linked to, but they did start talking about less women presenting at conferences which is true, but I'd say women have a lot to say in the blogosphere and they are being recognised.

What would be an interesting topic to explore is, 'What are the different ways men and women use blogs?'

For myself, I have been blogging since June 1, 2007. I taught myself the basics of using a computer about 5 years ago so that I could use it to work on my genealogy. Only this year, have I really started traveling the internet in search of other knowledge and activities. Back in Sept. 2006, I started emailing a friend about his blog. After awhile, he told me that I should have my own blog because I was a writer also. In May, he told me how to set up my own blog and as they say, the rest is history. I am old enough that my children are grown so I have more time to spend doing what I want to do.

Thanks for the comments Jaycee and Patricia. Actually I was a little surprised by how few responses I got, as I thought this topic would cause a lot of heated discussion. The same can be said for the discussion at the cross post at Tony's blog. The interesting part of the comments was that gender was split equally at Tony’s blog and I have a 100% response from ladies.

I think that diversity in the blogosphere is important because it enriches discussions and brings new perspectives. I would also be interested to see if there are any new research stats on gender discrepancies in the blogosphere.

I was actually chatting to a friend (female) over the weekend and she came across my blog. She said that the answer to why women blog less is pretty obvious. “Women pick up the phone when they have something to say”. I had to giggle at her tongue in cheek response.
